Celebrate the end of the Olympics

August 21, 2012 by Vicki

Ok, I will say it; I am so glad the Olympics are over. Now, I admit part of my problem is that I am Canadian. We have maybe three months of Summer and then it’s slush or snow depending where you live. Consequently, I really don’t have any interest in the Summer Olympics. Skiing, Figure Skating, Ski Boarding, HOCKEY; these are the sports that I grew up with and love. Swimming, gymnastics, running, soccer: I’m sorry, were you saying something? I think I may have tuned out somewhere there.

However, the other reason that I am glad that the Olympics are over is that they were everywhere. I’m sorry, we have a presidential election coming up, we have a possible drought going on in North America, we have a bad economy where most people of my age group can’t find work, the crime rate appears to still be high overall, and all the news can talk about is the Olympics? I’m reminded of the movie “Gladiator” where the Roman Emperor wanted to satiated the mob and so renewed the gladiator games. Are we really so easily distracted? Apparently so.

Then to the crowning glory of my frustration with the Olympics; the multitudes of abuses both suggested and apparent. From the admitted cheating of Cameron van der Burgh  to the suggested bribery in fencing, abuses appear rampant. Also, I thought that the Olympics we’re about gathering together and learning about each other. . . not winning? The frequent suggestions of sexism in the Olympics just made me frustrated. So, I am glad that the Olympics are over, are you?

Yes, I am with you on that. I would also like to add though, Thank Goodness, there was no terrorism this time.
